Shear the pruner and Drowse the season-reader stood over the same dormant rose, and a young dormouse named Pip was confused: Shear held her scissor-forearms ready, but Drowse kept murmuring "not yet, not yet." "Isn't cutting just... cutting?" Pip asked. "You know where. Why do you need her to tell you when?" The two exchanged a patient look. "Because," said Shear, "the very same cut I make can heal this plant or harm it — and the only thing that decides which is the season Drowse is reading. Where and when aren't two choices. They're one."
Shear went first, explaining her half. "I know the technique. I can look at any plant and see exactly where a cut will send its strength — snip the top tip and the buds below wake into bushy growth; thin a crowded stem and the survivors grow strong. That's apical dominance and directed growth, and I'm never wrong about the where." She lowered her forearms. "But watch what happens if I'm right about the where and wrong about the when. If I make my perfect strengthening cut on this rose right now —"
"— you'd wake it up in the middle of winter," Drowse finished, "and the frost would kill the tender new growth your cut invited. A cut is a wake-up call to the buds below it. My whole craft is knowing whether the plant is ready to answer. Right now this rose is dormant — sleeping, budgeting, waiting out the cold. Cut it now and you call its buds awake into a world that will freeze them. The same cut, made in early spring as the danger of frost lifts, would be perfect — the plant wakes into warmth and pours its strength exactly where Shear aimed it. Identical scissors. Identical stem. Opposite result — because of the calendar."
Pip's whiskers twitched as it landed. "So Shear's cut isn't good or bad by itself. It only becomes good or bad depending on Drowse's season!" "Exactly," said Shear. "My 'where' is only half a decision. A flawless cut at the wrong time is a wound — I've hurt plants that way, cutting correctly but too early, waking them to their death." Drowse nodded. "And my 'when' is only half a decision too. Knowing it's the right season to prune is useless if you don't know where to make the cut. Timing without technique just wanders around with scissors. Technique without timing is a perfect mistake."
So the two of them waited together through the last of the cold, Drowse watching the season turn, Shear watching the stems — and only when Drowse said "now, the frost is done and the sap is rising" did Shear make her cut, exactly where the plant's strength should go. Weeks later the rose broke into its strongest growth in years. "That's why we're one decision, Pip," Drowse said. "The cut and the calendar can't be separated. Where you cut decides what the plant tries to do. When you cut decides whether it survives doing it." "The same cut heals or harms," said Shear, "depending entirely on the season. Where and when are one choice — always."
