One sunny morning in Hollowmere Valley, Flitter the soft moth flutters down by the blue pond. "Let's play Hush," she says. "It's every game we know, all at once."
You get five big green leaves, and so does Flitter. Under your leaves you hide your animals: big Ursa the bear, a fox, a rabbit, tiny Puck the mouse, and your glowing Moonstone. Flitter hides hers the same way on the other side of the meadow.
Hush! You know which leaf is which on your side. You don't know Flitter's. That is the secret. Keep it quiet.
You take turns, one step at a time. When two leaves meet, both animals peek out. "Who is bigger?" asks Flitter.
Your Ursa meets Flitter's rabbit. The bear is bigger, so the rabbit goes home for a nap.
Then one of Flitter's leaves creeps up to your Ursa. Who is it? It's Flitter's mouse! He got there first. Tickle, tickle! Ursa giggles and rolls home. "Oh, that tickle trick!" you laugh.
Puck and the fox keep walking. At last you lift one of Flitter's leaves, and there it is, the Moonstone, glowing silver in the grass. "You found my Moonstone!" Flitter cheers, and spins in a happy circle.
Nobody is sad. Everybody played. A grown-up can play Hush with you too, with leaves or cups or little blankets.
Flitter, Ursa, and Puck lie in the grass and look up at the clouds.
Here is what they love best: the hushed, wiggly feeling of not knowing yet, and the happy surprise when a leaf is lifted. "Hush, hush, who's under there?" they sing together. "Peek and find it, play it fair!"
