Puck is a tiny brown mouse. He has big round pink ears, a long thin tail, and a little green shirt. Puck is so small he can hide behind a mushroom.
In the valley game, almost everyone is bigger than Puck. When Puck bumps into a rabbit, Puck goes home. When he bumps into a fox, Puck goes home.
"Everyone is bigger than me," Puck sighs, sitting on a pebble.
Flitter the moth flutters down beside him. "Everyone is bigger," she says softly. "But you have one special trick. Do you remember?"
Puck's ears perk up. He remembers!
If big Ursa the bear walks up to Puck, Ursa wins. But if Puck gets to Ursa FIRST, he can reach up and tickle her toes. And when Ursa is tickled, she laughs so much that she rolls all the way home!
The biggest bear, sent home by the tiniest mouse. Only Puck can do it, and only when he gets there first.
So Puck waits behind a log. He waits and waits. Here comes Ursa, walking slowly across the meadow.
Puck scampers out. He reaches her toes. Tickle, tickle!
Ursa giggles and giggles. "You got me, Puck!" she laughs, and she rolls happily home.
A grown-up can play the tickle trick with you. Who will get there first?
That night, Puck curls up in his tiny bed, full of happy feelings.
Here is what Puck loves best: the proud, glowing feeling of being small and still having a trick that matters. "I'm tiny, it's true," Puck yawns, "but if I get there first, I tickle Ursa too."
