Ribbet Counts Along

Ribbet was a little green frog who was learning to count — just like you. He couldn’t quite do it alone yet, so he did it with you. Every mark you made on your page, Ribbet counted right along.

You drew two dots with your crayon. “One… two,” you said, slow and clear, touching each dot. Ribbet hopped to each one after you — “One… two!” — and grinned his wide froggy grin. He counted the same as you, because you led the way.

Once you went a little fast and Ribbet got mixed up. So you slowed down and pointed at each mark again — one touch, one number. “Ahh,” said Ribbet, “now I can follow.” Going slow together helped you both land on the right number.

You made more marks — three, then four, then five — and Ribbet counted along every time. He never worried about getting it wrong, because you were counting together, and together felt safe and steady.

At the end, Ribbet did a happy little hop. “I can count to five now, because you counted with me!” Your crayon marks had taught him, one careful number at a time. And you had learned by teaching — the marks, the counting, and the quiet good feeling of doing it together.
