Chapter 5 — Trend and the Lines-Can-Bend

The cast had a season’s worth of data, and looking at it made them quiet in a worried kind of way. Trend had been waiting for exactly this moment.

Trend graphed everything the cast had gathered — Census’s weekly bird counts, Pin’s locations, Note’s careful two-column records, Spot’s observations. “Robins up. Sparrows down. Cardinals steady. Three trend lines for one neighborhood over one season.” Then Trend pulled out a second graph: the same park, forty years of records. “Forty years ago: more cardinals, fewer robins. Today the lines have shifted. Climate zones moved, and the birds’ ranges moved with them. THAT is a trend — many dots, over time, making a line you can actually see.”

The cast looked worried. It was a lot, laid out like that.

Trend smiled, gently, and turned the page. “But here’s the other half, and it’s just as true. In nineteen sixty-three, there were four hundred nesting pairs of bald eagles left in the whole country. Then, in nineteen seventy-two, people banned the pesticide that was thinning their eggshells. Today there are seventy thousand of them.” Trend traced the shape on the card — a sharp, frightening drop, and then a long, stubborn climb back up. “The line bent. Not by accident. Because people made a different choice.”

The cast studied that climbing line.

“Today is one dot,” Trend said quietly. “Many dots make a line. Lines can bend. And your dot — every count you take, every report you file — helps decide which way this one bends. We don’t know yet. It isn’t written. But the kids who track and report and speak up are part of the bending. That’s not a comforting story I’m telling you. It’s just the honest one: the worry is real, AND so is the agency. Both. Always both.”

Scout the mentor watched, and nodded. “Trend closes the cast,” Scout said, “and holds the door against despair. The line is honest. The power to bend it is honest too.”

“Today is one dot. Many dots make a line. Lines can bend. Your dot helps the line.”
