Twinn

Twinn and the Look-Alike That Never Fit
Twinn had a twin, and it was made of light.
Whenever she stood in front of the workshop’s tall polished window, a second Twinn appeared inside the glass — same blocks, same colours, same little tilt of the head. Everybody adored the pair of them. “Two Twinns!” they’d cheer. “Perfectly the same!”
But Twinn knew a quiet secret about her window-twin, and it took her a long time to be brave enough to say it out loud: they were not the same, and you could never make them the same, no matter how hard you tried.
She proved it the day a builder tried to fit the window-twin’s shape into Twinn’s own spot. He turned it left. He turned it right. He tipped it, rolled it, stood it on its head, and every single time one corner poked out where Twinn had a dent, and one dent sat where Twinn had a corner. Close — heartbreakingly close — but never, ever, cube-for-cube the same.
“It’s broken,” the builder groaned.
“It’s not broken,” said Twinn. “It’s a flip. And here’s the strange, true thing: you can turn a shape all day and still land it right, but you can never turn a flip back into me. A flip is a whole different beast.”
To help him see it, she held up her own two hands. “Look. Left hand, right hand. Same fingers, same shape, mirror-perfect. Now try to lay your left hand exactly onto your right, palm-down, thumbs the same way.” He tried. The thumbs went opposite. He laughed, surprised. “They won’t! They never will.”
“That’s a flip,” said Twinn, gently. “My window-twin is my other hand. Gorgeous to look at, impossible to spin onto me.”
After that the builder stopped panicking every time two shapes almost-but-not-quite matched. He’d just hold up his hands and remember. If turning it round and round never lands it right, it isn’t the same shape hiding — it’s the mirror, saying hello.
Twinn liked being a mirror, in the end. It was its own kind of special: the look-alike who could keep you honest, the reminder that looks the same and is the same are two different promises. She waved at her window-twin, and her window-twin waved back with the wrong hand, exactly as it always would.
“A flip is not a turn,” she told the builder as he packed up. “My mirror looks just like me — but you can never spin it onto me.”
