- Narrator: From Spark and Anvil and BluffForge — this is Matchley, in chapter 1 of the BluffForge cast.
- Narrator: This drama uses an AI-generated voice. Voiced via Gemini 2.5.
- Narrator: There are only two 8s in a Red army. This is the story of one of them, and of the Blue 8 it met.
- Red Eight: I'm strong. Only the 9 and Ursa beat me. So I didn't expect to be sent to a meeting I couldn't win.
- Narrator: Late in the game, Blue's last 8 was creeping toward Red's back row, where the Moonstone hid behind one bramble.
- Red Piece: If their 8 gets through, it'll find our Moonstone!
- Matchley: Don't look at the 8. Look behind it. What's there?
- Red Piece: A Blue badger. A 3.
- Matchley: The only kind of piece that can clear a bramble. And behind our 8?
- Red Piece: Our 9.
- Matchley: Same and same. If our 8 meets theirs, both go home. That's even. But then our 9 is free, and their badger is alone.
- Red Eight: So I went. I knew I wouldn't come back.
- Narrator: The two 8s met. Both turned over. Both went home. Then Red's 9 stepped forward and sent the badger home too.
- Red Eight: Our back row was safe for the rest of the game.
- Matchley: The trade was even. The board it left behind wasn't.
- Narrator: Before you trade, look at who stands behind each piece. That's the eight's story.
- Narrator: You've been listening to a Spark and Anvil chapter, written by the Spark and Anvil writing team for ages 9 to 14.
