Mission 12 of 16

History & Culture of Cards

📋 What it is

Playing cards spread across the world for centuries, and different cultures shaped the deck we know today.

🗣️ Coach says

Cards traveled from Asia through the Middle East to Europe over hundreds of years, and each culture left a mark — different suits, designs, and games. Studied on their own terms, card traditions show how math and play cross every border.

🧠 Memory hook

Cards are a WORLD story: many cultures, many decks, one shared love of number and pattern play.

😂 Giggle

What did the two of clubs say to the three of clubs?
"I'm one less than you, but I still belong to the club!"

😲 Whoa!

The four suits we use (♠♥♦♣) come from French designs of the 1400s, but earlier decks used cups, coins, swords, and clubs — still used in Spain and Italy today.

✅ Quick check: Did playing cards come from a single country?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Look up one non-standard deck (like the Spanish or Italian suits). Note one way it differs from the 52-card deck.
