Case 7 of 16

Codebreaking Techniques

📋 What it is

Codebreakers combine tools — frequency analysis, guessing common words, and spotting patterns — to crack a cipher.

🗣️ Coach says

Cracking a code is detective work. You count letter frequencies, guess short common words (the, and, is), and use each solved letter to unlock more. One good guess cascades into the whole message.

🧠 Memory hook

One solved letter unlocks the next — guess common words and cascade.

😂 Giggle

Why did the Vigenere cipher bring a friend?
Because one key just wasn't enough!

😲 Whoa!

The Enigma code-breakers in WWII got a huge boost from guessing that many messages ENDED with the same phrase (“Heil Hitler”) — a known bit of text is a codebreaker’s best friend.

✅ Quick check: You’ve cracked that a 3-letter word is “the”. How does that help crack more?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Given a coded 3-letter word that appears a lot, guess “the” and see how many letters that gives you.

🤸 Brain break: Cascade-mime: solve one “letter”, then point to three more it “unlocks”.
