Where this game comes from

The cube

Ernő Rubik, who taught design at the College of Applied Arts in Budapest, made the first cube in 1974 while working out how many small parts could turn without the whole falling apart. It went on sale in Hungary in 1977 as the “Magic Cube”, and around the world in 1980. He has said it took him about a month to solve his own cube.

One thing to hold: An early model was made of wooden blocks.

Why it matters: A cube can be mixed into 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 different positions. In 2010 a team using Google’s computers showed that every one of them can be solved in 20 turns or fewer.

In the inventor’s words:

Dates:

  1. 1974 Rubik makes the first cube in Budapest.
  2. 1975 He applies for a Hungarian patent for the “Magic Cube” (Bűvös kocka), patent HU 170062.
  3. 1977 The first Magic Cubes go on sale in Budapest toy shops.
  4. 1980 It goes on sale around the world as Rubik’s Cube.
  5. 1982 The first world championship, in Budapest, is won by Minh Thai with a solve of 22.95 seconds.
  6. 2010 Every position is shown to be solvable in 20 turns or fewer.
