Cube notation names each face (U, D, L, R, F, B) and a letter means a quarter-turn clockwise of that face.

Every solve starts with a shared language. The six faces are Up, Down, Left, Right, Front, Back — so a move "R" means turn the right face a quarter-turn clockwise. Add an apostrophe (R') for counter-clockwise and a 2 (R2) for a half-turn. Once you can read notation, any algorithm becomes a recipe.

Turn the Right face a quarter-turn COUNTER-clockwise — the apostrophe reverses the plain "R" (clockwise) turn.
A prime (') always means the anticlockwise version of that face turn.
🪄 Trick question: Does "R2" mean turn the right face twice as fast?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
No — R2 means a HALF turn (180°) of the right face; the number is how far it turns, not how fast.
R2 is a 180° turn; notation describes the turn amount, not speed.
