A 3×3 cube has three piece types: 6 fixed centres, 12 two-colour edges, and 8 three-colour corners.

A cube isn't 54 loose stickers — it's three kinds of PIECE. The 6 centres never move relative to each other (so the centre colour IS that face's colour). The 12 edges show two colours; the 8 corners show three. Understanding the pieces is the key that turns memorised moves into real understanding.
