Mission 11 of 16

Dance Analysis & Critical Response

📋 What it is

Analysing dance means describing what you see with dance vocabulary, then responding thoughtfully — not just "I liked it".

🗣️ Coach says

To ANALYSE a dance, first DESCRIBE what actually happened using dance words (the elements: space, time, energy), then INTERPRET what it might mean, then give a thoughtful RESPONSE. "It was good" isn't analysis — "the sharp, low movements felt tense" is. Seeing clearly is a skill.

🧠 Memory hook

Analysis = describe (with dance words) → interpret → respond thoughtfully. Not just "I liked it".

😂 Giggle

Why did the salsa dancer bring chips to rehearsal?
They heard there'd be a great dip!

😲 Whoa!

Dance critics train their eyes for years — learning to describe exactly WHAT they saw and WHY it worked, using the same elements every dancer learns.

✅ Quick check: What is the first step in analysing a dance?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Watch (or picture) a short dance and describe ONE thing using the elements — e.g. "fast, sharp, low".

🤸 Brain break: Observe-breath: breathe in "what did I see?", out describing it in three plain words.
