About DeckPals

Deck-building — start with a weak set of cards, buy better ones, thin the weak ones out, and watch your draws get stronger — is one of the great modern board-game mechanisms. But it starts at age 10+ and hides the maths inside a shuffled deck. DeckPals brings it to ages 6–8 and does the one thing that unlocks the learning: the deck is a see-through jar, so the child watches how the bag they build shapes the hands they draw.

The see-through jar

Every token is always visible, grouped by kind, with an honest “about 1 in N draws” beside it. When you buy a gem or throw away a pebble, those numbers change in front of the child — that’s composition-probability and expected value, felt rather than lectured.

Buying is the mechanic, not a reward (the Timer Rule)

Everything a loot game does to make you spend, DeckPals leaves out on purpose. You pay for tokens with the shine you draw, there’s no money and nothing to buy, no timer and no streak, and nothing ever runs out. That’s a rule we hold across the whole library: no wait can be bought, and nothing rots.

Game weight (measured, not asserted)

We follow one rule across the library: a game’s weight is measured, never guessed. The pips below come from letting the computer play DeckPals hundreds of times and counting how many choices a turn it holds and how long a round runs — so a grown-up can pick by how much the child has to keep in their head, and this number stays honest as the game changes.

What it’s good for (and what we don’t claim)

DeckPals is gentle practice for composition-probability and expected value — reading a jar and seeing how a change moves the odds. It is not a maths program or a brain-training app, and we make no claim it raises IQ or test scores.

Safe by design

  • On your device. Progress stays in your browser — no account, no sign-in, nothing sent anywhere.
  • No dark patterns. No timer, no streak, no score to chase, and no way to spend money.
  • Honest odds. The “1 in N” you see is the number the jar really draws against — always.
