Case 12 of 16

Forming a Hypothesis

📋 What it is

A hypothesis is a testable "if… then…" guess you make BEFORE you check.

🗣️ Coach says

A hypothesis isn’t a wild guess — it’s a guess you can test. "If I water this plant more, then it grows faster." The magic word is testable: you must be able to prove it wrong.

🧠 Memory hook

If… then… — and it must be able to be WRONG. A guess you can’t test isn’t a hypothesis.

😂 Giggle

Why did the wrong guess still smile?
Because it just eliminated a whole branch of wrong answers!

😲 Whoa!

A hypothesis that can’t possibly be proven wrong is useless to science — being falsifiable is what makes it powerful.

✅ Quick check: Which is a real hypothesis: "plants like music" or "if plants get 2 more hours of light, then they grow taller"?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Turn a curiosity into an "if… then…" you could actually test at home (e.g. "if I drop toast, then it lands butter-side down").
