The people behind the trick

1929. When Universal turned its silent film Show Boat into a film with sound, Jack Foley and his crew recorded the footsteps and noises live while they watched the picture. Sound artists who do this are still called Foley artists.

Try it at the table: crunch a handful of cornflakes in a bag for footsteps in snow, or snap a stick of celery for a breaking branch.
