When two ideas meet

Two people, one decision each time. Choose, see what actually happens, then reflect.

A case · you decide

Jamal and Theo: the number you can actually spend

Jamal & Theo — a new hire looking at a job offer, and a friend who knows what withholding does to it

The idea in play: the offer is gross pay; taxes are withheld before the paycheck arrives, so a budget has to be built from net pay.

Jamal's offer is $18 an hour for 30 hours a week, which is $540 a week. He wants to sign a lease that costs half of that.

Theo explains that federal, state and payroll taxes are withheld from every paycheck, based partly on the W-4 Jamal fills in.

What should Jamal budget from?

Zoe and Andre: the apartment that seems too good

Zoe & Andre — a friend who spots scams, and one who reads every lease before signing

The idea in play: urgency, payment before a viewing and untraceable payment methods are the classic rental-scam signs; a real landlord lets you see the place and sign a lease first.

An online listing offers a flat well below the local price. The "owner" is abroad, can't show it, and asks for a $300 deposit by wire transfer today to hold it.

Andre points out there is no lease yet. Zoe points out that everything about the offer is rushed.

What should they do?
