Cờ người: the people’s board

At Tết, the Lunar New Year, Vietnamese families sometimes play xiangqi on a board drawn on the ground, with people as the pieces. Each person wears the name of their piece and walks to their point when the player calls the move. Here is that board to print: 72 A3 sheets, one square each, that tape together into a floor board 8 squares across and 9 down, and 32 name cards to wear. Put the screen away, and play.

  1. Print the 72 board sheets on A3 paper, landscape. Each sheet has its place written in the corner (A1 to H9).
  2. Cut each sheet along the outer edge of its square (a dashed line where the river row has no side lines). Lay them out using the map below, A1 at Red’s bottom-left corner, edge to edge, and tape the backs. In the river row the lines stop, as they do on a real board.
  3. Print the name cards, cut them out, and give one to each person. Pieces stand on the points where the lines cross, not in the squares.
