Round 5 of 16

The Chariot

📋 What it is

The Chariot moves any distance in a straight line (like a rook) and is the strongest piece in Xiangqi.

🗣️ Coach says

The Chariot is your heavy hitter — it slides any number of points horizontally or vertically, exactly like a chess rook. It's the most valuable piece on the board, so develop it early and use it to control open files. Whoever uses their Chariots better usually wins.

🧠 Memory hook

Chariot = the rook. Straight lines, any distance. Your strongest piece.

😂 Giggle

Why did the Horse get blocked so easily?
Because if a piece sits right next to it, the Horse can't hobble past!

😲 Whoa!

The Chariot is so dominant that a common saying values one Chariot as worth roughly TWO Cannons or two Horses — losing a Chariot for less is a classic blunder.

✅ Quick check: Which Xiangqi piece is the most powerful, and how does it move?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Slide a Chariot down an open file and across a rank. Notice how much of the board it controls at once.

🤸 Brain break: Straight-slide: sweep an arm in a long straight line — the Chariot's reach.
