Round 10 of 16

Opening Principles

📋 What it is

A good opening develops the strong pieces (Chariots and Cannons) quickly and fights for the centre.

🗣️ Coach says

Don't shuffle defenders in the opening — get your POWER pieces out. Develop your Chariots to open files, place a Cannon on a useful line, and contest the central file. The famous "Central Cannon" opening puts a Cannon in the middle to pressure the enemy General straight away.

🧠 Memory hook

Develop Chariots and Cannons fast. Fight for the centre file early.

😂 Giggle

Why did the Cannon feel like a chess trickster?
Because it moves like a Chariot but captures in a way no Western piece does!

😲 Whoa!

The "Central Cannon vs Screen Horses" opening is the most famous battle in Xiangqi — studied for centuries, it's the game's equivalent of a classic chess opening.

✅ Quick check: Which pieces should you prioritise developing in the Xiangqi opening?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Set the pieces and play the first three moves of the "Central Cannon" opening. See how it eyes the General.
