The idea in play: a grammar is a system of consistent rules you can infer from evidence — never a guess.

Ana has twelve sentences and their English translations, written down beside a speaker who checked every one. She does not “know” the language — nobody handed her a dictionary. But the rules are hiding in the data, and if she reads it like a detective, she can predict a sentence she has never seen.

The trick is not to translate word for word. It is to find MINIMAL PAIRS — two forms that differ by exactly one piece — because the piece that changes must carry the meaning that changed. If “kan” is dog and “kanti” is dogs, then “-ti” means plural. One comparison, one rule.

Then she tests the rule against the rest of the notebook. A real grammar is CONSISTENT: a suffix means the same thing everywhere, and pieces stack in a fixed order. When every sentence obeys the rules she wrote down, she can finally translate a brand-new one — and be right, because the language told her, not a hunch.
