Gomoku
📋 What it is
Gomoku: place stones on a grid; first to get FIVE in a row (no gravity) wins.
🗣️ Coach says
Like Connect-4 with freedom — stones go anywhere, and you need five in a row. That freedom makes forks even deadlier. Build "open" lines (blocked on neither end) because they threaten to grow both ways.
🧠 Memory hook
Five in a row, place anywhere. Open lines threaten both directions.
😂 Giggle
Why did the Gomoku stone feel unstoppable?
Because it was one away from five in a row!
😲 Whoa!
Gomoku has been played for centuries in East Asia and is still a serious competitive game today.
✅ Quick check: Why is an "open" line (empty on both ends) more dangerous than a "closed" one?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
It can grow toward a win from EITHER end, so it creates two threats — much harder for the opponent to block.
Open vs closed lines is the key Gomoku threat idea.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Draw a row of three stones with both ends open — show the two squares that would extend it.
