How to play HaggleQuest

HaggleQuest is a negotiation coach for ages 9–14, set in Zara's Trading Post near Gullwick. Each puzzle is a real board moment from a trading game: you want to build something, you're short a good, and the islanders (plus the cove) are trading. Your job is to predict the best move — then Zara shows you how every move grades. Five ideas run the whole game:

  • Gains — does it help YOU build? — A move is only worth it if it gets you closer to what you're building. A trade that hands over a good you still need can actually set you back.
  • Fairness — is the rate fair? — Some goods are scarce today (worth more) and some are plenty (worth less). Watch the rate: paying a lot of a scarce good for a cheap one is a poor deal, even if it fills a need.
  • Manner — does it help them too? — A neighbour only says yes if the deal helps THEM too. The warmest trades are win-wins. Asking for a good your friend is short of is a greedy ask — and they'll say no.
  • BATNA — the cove is your floor — The cove (the island bank) will always trade at a fixed rate — that's your Best Alternative. Never take a neighbour deal that is WORSE than the cove.
  • Don't feed the leader — Handing the player who's already winning the very good they need helps them win faster. Sometimes a smaller deal — or none at all — is the smarter move.

Why "predict, then check"?

You commit to a move before Zara reveals her grades. That moment of guessing — and finding out why you were right or off — is what makes a good move stick. There's no clock and no score to chase: Zara just tells you which move she'd make and why, so next time you spot it yourself. Sometimes the smartest move is no deal at all.

A note for grown-ups: HaggleQuest builds the reasoning behind a good trade — weighing your own gains, a fair rate, and a partner's needs, and spotting when to walk away — through prediction and feedback, with no exam and no skill claim. Every move is graded by a small, exact engine (checked by automated tests) on your device; nothing about your game leaves it. There's an optional "🔊 Read to me" button.
