For grown-ups

Toddlers help strangers without being asked: in studies by Felix Warneken and Michael Tomasello (2006), 18-month-olds picked up a dropped pen or opened a cupboard for an adult whose hands were full.

A reward can backfire. When 20-month-olds got a toy for helping, they later helped less than toddlers who got nothing, or just a warm “thank you” (Warneken & Tomasello, 2008). HelpPals answers each kind idea with warm words, never a prize.

A story to read together: The Lion and the Mouse (Aesop). A tiny mouse frees a great lion from a hunter’s net by gnawing the ropes. Small helpers matter.
