Lighting & Shadow

📋 What it is

Where light falls and where shadow sits gives a drawing depth, mood and drama — light from below feels spooky, from above natural.

🗣️ Coach says

Light sculpts a drawing. Decide where the light comes from, and shadows fall on the opposite side, giving flat art real depth. Light also sets mood — soft top light feels calm, harsh light from below feels spooky. Control the light, control the feeling.

🧠 Memory hook

Light one side → shadow the other = depth. Light direction = mood.

😂 Giggle

Why don't manga sound effects ever whisper?
Because BOOM and CRASH don't know how to be quiet!

😲 Whoa!

Shining a light from below a face — the classic “campfire” angle — instantly makes it look eerie or villainous.

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Shine a light (or imagine one) on an object and notice where the shadow falls.

🤸 Brain break: Light angle: “point” a light from above, then below, and feel the mood change.
