The Doubling Cube
📋 What it is
The doubling cube raises the game's stakes value; you should offer it when you are clearly ahead but not certain.
🗣️ Coach says
The cube is a marker that multiplies how much the game is worth (2, 4, 8…). Offering it says "I think I am winning." Your opponent either takes (accepts the higher value) or drops (concedes now). It is a pure math-of-confidence decision, not luck.
🧠 Memory hook
Ahead but not sure to win? Offer the cube. Behind badly? Drop instead of playing on.
😂 Giggle
Why did two checkers love standing together?
Because a point with two checkers is safe — it can't be hit!
😲 Whoa!
The doubling cube was invented in the 1920s and instantly made backgammon a game of JUDGMENT, not just dice — deciding when to double is the hardest skill in the game.
✅ Quick check: When is the best time to offer the doubling cube?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
When you are clearly ahead but the win is not yet certain — you gain if you win and pressure the opponent to decide.
Doubling is most valuable with a real advantage that still carries some risk.
🪄 Trick question: Should you offer the doubling cube when you are far BEHIND?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
No — doubling when losing just raises the stakes on a game you'll probably lose; you double when you're ahead.
The cube rewards the side with the advantage, not the side that is behind.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Think of a race where you're ahead 90 to 110 pips. Discuss: is that a "double"? (Ahead, but not certain — often yes.)
