Mission 3 of 16

Misconceptions & Reasoning

📋 What it is

Test "obvious" energy ideas against evidence — many beliefs about power and saving energy are wrong.

🗣️ Coach says

Energy has feels-right-but-wrong ideas: energy isn’t "used up" and gone (it converts, often to waste heat), "renewable" doesn’t mean unlimited-anytime (the sun sets, wind stops), and leaving a device on standby still draws power. Reason from how energy actually flows, not from slogans.

🧠 Memory hook

Feels-true ≠ is-true. Energy converts (to waste heat), it isn’t destroyed; standby still uses power.

😂 Giggle

Why was the electricity bill so shocked?
It couldn't believe the current charges!

😲 Whoa!

Devices left on "standby" — TVs, chargers, consoles — quietly draw power all day; these "energy vampires" can add up to about 10% of a home’s electricity.

✅ Quick check: Does a phone charger left plugged in (with no phone) use any energy?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Feel a charger plugged in with nothing attached — slight warmth means it’s still drawing power.

🤸 Brain break: Doubt-pause: raise a finger, "wait — is that energy really gone, or just converted?"
