Multi Capture Chains
📋 What it is
Some versions let captures chain — a capture can set up conditions for another on the same or next turn.
🗣️ Coach says
In several mancala variants, captures can cascade: after one capture, an adjacent pit may now also qualify, letting you sweep several pits in a row. Even where a single turn captures once, a well-planned sequence of turns can chain captures move after move. Look for the whole chain, not just one grab.
🧠 Memory hook
One capture can open the next. Plan the whole chain, not a single grab.
😂 Giggle
Why did the greedy move backfire?
The seeds chained backward and the whole row got harvested!
😲 Whoa!
In Oware (the West African version) captures can sweep BACKWARD through a run of pits holding exactly two or three seeds — one move can harvest several pits at once.
✅ Quick check: Why look for a capture CHAIN rather than just a single capture?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Because one capture can create the conditions for another (adjacent pits or follow-up turns), letting you win far more seeds than a single grab.
Chained captures multiply your seed gains from one setup.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
In Oware rules, set a run of pits with 2 or 3 seeds and sow so your last seed starts a backward capture chain.
