Real cases

Two of the ideas you practise, meeting in one real situation. Choose, see what actually happens, then reflect.

A case · you decide

Track and Ask make room

Track & Ask — a 16-year-old taking the Tracker chair in a four-person seminar

The idea in play: the Tracker notices who has not spoken, and the Opener brings them in with a real question.

Twenty minutes in, Ben has spoken nine times and Rae has not spoken at all. She has been writing notes on paragraph three.

Track's job is to notice who has spoken and make room for quiet voices.

Ask's job is to pose a real question and invite a new voice.

What should the Tracker do?

Steel and Close before the bell

Steel & Close — a 17-year-old in the Steel-manner chair during a seminar on school phone bans

The idea in play: state the strongest version of the other view before replying, and close by naming the best point and the open question.

Omar thinks phone bans are unfair. Before he replies to Priya, who supports them, it is his job to state her view at its strongest.

Steel's move: say the opposing view so well its holder would sign it.

Close's move, at the end: name the strongest point made and the question still open.

Which is a real steel-man of Priya's view?
