About ShelfPals
ShelfPals is a free, leveled reading library for ages 6–8 — a calm answer to the big subscription reading apps. Books sit on three shelves that grow with the reader:
- 🌱 Sprout — First books — short, sound-it-out words. (2 books)
- 🌿 Grower — Little stories with longer words. (2 books)
- 🌳 Reader — Bigger stories to sink into. (2 books)
Every page can be read to you, and you can tap any word to hear it on its own. When you finish a book, 🐭 Marlow the librarian asks you to tell it back — put the parts of the story in the order they happened. Get it right and you earn a Reading Passport stamp.
The Passport stamps finished-and-retold books, never minutes on a clock — so it rewards understanding a story, not just staring at a screen. The next shelf opens once you have a stamp on the shelf before it, so every reader moves at their own pace.
Honest note for grown-ups: ShelfPals is a calm, leveled reading habit with a built-in retell-for-comprehension step. The reading levels are set by a real readability measure, not guessed. It is a taste, not a claim of any particular reading outcome. Everything runs on this device; there are no accounts, no ads, and nothing a child does leaves the device. Today the library holds 6 short books, with more to come.
