Territory
📋 What it is
You win Go by surrounding more empty territory (plus captured stones) than your opponent.
🗣️ Coach says
Capturing is fun, but Go is really about TERRITORY — the empty points your stones surround. At the end, you count your surrounded space plus any prisoners. The player with more points wins. So every stone is really staking a claim on empty land.
🧠 Memory hook
Surround empty space, not stones. Most territory + prisoners wins.
😂 Giggle
Why did the Go stones work as a team?
Because connected stones share their liberties and stay strong!
😲 Whoa!
Because a beginner can capture a few stones yet still LOSE on territory, learning to value empty space over exciting captures is the first big leap in strength.
✅ Quick check: What are you actually trying to gain to WIN a game of Go?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The most territory — empty points surrounded by your stones (plus captured prisoners) — not the most captures.
Go is scored by surrounded territory, so space matters more than captures.
🪄 Trick question: Player A captured 6 stones; player B surrounded far more empty territory. Who likely wins?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
Player B — territory (surrounded empty space) plus prisoners decides the game, and more territory usually outweighs a few captures.
Winning is about total territory, not raw capture count.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
On a 9×9, wall off a corner and count the empty points inside. That's your territory.
