Reading & Common Mistakes
📋 What it is
"Reading" is calculating moves ahead in your head; the top beginner mistakes are chasing captures and ignoring your own weak groups.
🗣️ Coach says
Reading means playing the sequence out in your MIND before you place a stone — "if I go here, they go there, then…". The most common mistakes are getting greedy for captures while your own group is about to die, and following the opponent around instead of taking big points.
🧠 Memory hook
Read the sequence in your head first. Don't chase captures while your own group is dying.
😂 Giggle
Why did beginners learn "capture Go" first?
Because just practicing captures teaches liberties before territory!
😲 Whoa!
Strong players "read" ten or more moves ahead in complex fights — and the biggest jump in strength usually comes from checking your OWN group's safety before attacking.
✅ Quick check: Name a common beginner mistake in Go and its fix.
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Chasing captures while your own group is weak → check your own group's safety (two eyes) first; or blindly following the opponent → take the big points instead.
Reading ahead and valuing your own safety prevents the most frequent errors.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Before your next three moves, pause and read one line in your head ("if I…, they…, then…") before playing.
