Reading that takes you longer is not the same as not understanding. Here are the tools, and the words to ask for them.

Three things, in the order they help

Try the tools. Have any text read aloud with the words lit up, break long words into their parts, mark syllables, or read one line at a time.
Know your supports. Extended time, audio books, notes before class — what each one is, and how strong the evidence is for each tool (including the ones that are mostly marketing).
Ask for them. Pick who you are asking and what would help. Get a short script, hear it, then rehearse it with the words hidden.

Rafe — a 16-year-old who knows the history cold but runs out of time on long written tests

The idea in play: ask for extended time early and in writing — before the test, not after the grade.

Rafe’s history final is in three weeks. On the last test he knew every answer he reached, and never reached the last four questions.

He could email his teacher tonight, talk to the counsellor next week, or wait and see how the final goes.

What should Rafe do?
