Mission 14 of 16

Water Quality & Aquatic Life

📋 What it is

Studying the creatures in a waterway — fish, insects, plants — reveals the health of the whole aquatic system.

🗣️ Coach says

Aquatic life tells a story. A healthy waterway supports fish, insect larvae, plants and amphibians in balance; pollution or warming shifts that balance — some species vanish, others take over. By surveying what lives in the water, citizen scientists track a waterway’s health over time and catch problems early.

🧠 Memory hook

Survey aquatic life (fish, bugs, plants) → tracks a waterway’s health + catches pollution early.

😂 Giggle

What did the soil sample say to the scientist?
"Dig a little deeper — there's more to me than meets the eye!"

😲 Whoa!

Frogs and other amphibians are like living pollution alarms — their thin, absorbent skin makes them so sensitive that their decline warns of trouble in an ecosystem.

✅ Quick check: Why are amphibians like frogs good indicators of ecosystem health?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Near a pond, note what lives there (frogs? fish? bugs?) — that mix is a clue to its health.

🤸 Brain break: Survey-it: mime scooping a net through water and "checking" what’s inside.
