The Skipping Rope

The idea: one moment usually has more than one cause.

On a school playground Lan holds a skipping rope while Inkling copies words on a bench and Beto watches.

Who is in this book

Every recurring character has a short tune, so you can tell who is on stage before a word is said. The tunes play only when you tap, and the Reading Access sound switch turns them off.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • People who were in the same place can give honest accounts of one event that don't match. This is called the Rashomon effect, after Kurosawa's 1950 film. Source
  • The film comes from Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's 1922 story "In a Grove", where four witnesses tell one event four ways. Source

Stretched

  • Everyone remembers their part of the minute clearly. What we simplified: Real memories of a busy minute are patchy, and people fill gaps without noticing.

Made up

  • Brightfield School and the skipping rope are made up. Manywhy, Kindling and Hap come from ThreadForge, and Rheo from ShadeForge.

Tell it back

Tell the story in your own words: who was there, what went wrong, and what they found out. Then a paper dial you can turn from a little to a lot goes on your belt.
