Across the Table
Find the quiet reason. Think of a time someone didn't do what you expected: didn't wave back, didn't come over, didn't answer. Write down the reason you thought of first. Then write two more reasons it might have been, including one that person might not have wanted to say out loud.
Before chapter 5. Beto is sure Danya doesn't want to sit with him. What else could be going on?
The answer. Three threads: Danya didn't see Beto wave; Mr Ade called "front seats for anyone who feels coach-sick" just as the line moved; and the quiet reason, which Bobbin found by asking privately: Danya feels sick at the back of coaches and didn't want everyone to know.
Pause to think. Why did Bobbin wait until the others had gone to look at the ducks?
The grown-up layer. Children often read a friend's action as being about them. Asking "what else?" and leaving room for a private reason is a skill. ThreadForge has the threads, ShadeForge the dial.
For the ride home. Ask: what helps you when you feel sick in a car?
