Across the Table
Read it with four jobs. Find a short story, a fairy tale or a news article. One person guesses from the title. One stops at each hard word and works it out from the words around it. One asks a "why" question in the middle. One sums it up in one sentence at the end. Swap jobs next time.
Before chapter 3. Why does nobody say there is nothing there?
The answer. Because the swindlers said only foolish people could not see the cloth, so everyone was afraid to look foolish, and each person who said "beautiful" made it harder for the next. A child, who was not worried about looking clever, said what was true.
About the text. Hans Christian Andersen published the story in 1837. It is public domain. This is a short, plain retelling.
Pause to think. Have you ever pretended to understand something so you didn't look silly?
The grown-up layer. Questioning, predicting, clarifying and summing up together are called reciprocal teaching. ReadQuest has the four crew.
