The Empty Hook

The idea: record the scene before you touch it, then decode.

Read it

Who is in this book

Every recurring character has a short tune, so you can tell who is on stage before a word is said. The tunes play only when you tap, and the Reading Access sound switch turns them off.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • In a Caesar shift every letter moves the same number of places along the alphabet. DVN WKH FRRN, moved back three, reads ASK THE COOK. Source
  • Real crime-scene investigators photograph and sketch a scene before anything is moved, because moving things changes what the scene can tell you. Source

Stretched

  • Three scuffs led straight to the strip of paper. What we simplified: Real marks are messier and can come from anyone walking past. The story keeps one clear trail so the drawing can do its job.

Made up

  • Brightfield School's club room, its missing bell and the heron who draws scenes are made up.

Tell it back

Tell the story in your own words: who was there, what went wrong, and what they found out. Then the first card on the case board goes on your belt.
