The Loose End

The idea: a floppy part can be the working part.

Read it

Who is in this book

Every recurring character has a short tune, so you can tell who is on stage before a word is said. The tunes play only when you tap, and the Reading Access sound switch turns them off.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • Some parts of proteins never settle into one shape, and these floppy parts often do important jobs, such as catching partners. Source
  • Thirty of 120 links is a quarter of the chain.
  • Structure predictions give each part a confidence score, and very low confidence often marks a floppy part. Source

Stretched

  • Frozen proteins do not move during the picture; the blur comes from many copies frozen in slightly different shapes. What we simplified: The story says the tail 'would not hold still', which is how the blur is usually read.

Made up

  • Margit, Kemi and their protein are made up.

Tell it back

Tell the story in your own words: who was there, what went wrong, and what they found out. Then the second pair goes on your belt.

Ring the hammer for someone

Across the Table → For the grown-up: the story in three lines, one question to ask, and one thing to do together.
