Across the Table

The story in three lines. Flitter hides the Moonstone. Briar the bramble sits in front of the last leaf, and anyone who bumps her goes home. Under the first leaf is Burdock the badger, who digs the bramble aside, so Tí can lift the last leaf himself.

The five nights. Night one, listen. Night two, let your child say the bold last words. Night three, join in the refrains. Night four, stop and ask the question in the story. Night five, tell it to a toy.

Play the bramble game. Put three cups upside down. Hide a button under one. Put a soft toy in front of one cup: that is the bramble, and only the "badger" (another toy) can move it. Take turns lifting one cup at a time.

The question on night four: Who can clear the bramble?

The answer. Only Burdock the badger. Pushing through the bramble sends you home. Each friend in the Hollow can do one special thing.

The grown-up layer. Waiting for the right helper instead of pushing is a big idea at three. HollowTots and HollowPals play the same hidden-piece game.

For the ride home. Ask: what job is yours at home?
