The Hollow · Across the Table · for grown-ups
Across the Table
The story in three lines. Flitter hides the Moonstone. Under the first leaf is Hopwell the hare, who sits on the path. Under the second is Skipwell, a hare exactly the same size; they bump, and both go home, so Tí can lift the last leaf himself.
The five nights. Night one, listen. Night two, let your child say the bold last words. Night three, join in the refrains. Night four, stop and ask the question in the story. Night five, tell it to a toy.
The question on night four: What happens when two the same bump?
The answer. Both go home. In the Hollow, bigger sends smaller home, but two the same size cancel out. Nobody wins and nobody loses.
One thing to do at the table. Use two of the same thing (two spoons, two socks) and two that are different sizes. Play bumping: bigger sends smaller home, and two the same both go home.
The grown-up layer. Comparing sizes, and seeing that "the same" is its own answer, comes before counting. HollowPals plays the full game.
For the ride home. Ask: what two things at home are exactly the same?
