HitchForge

Which knot won't choke down when you pull it? Why does a reef knot fail the moment you join a thin rope to a thick one? And why does a trucker's hitch let a 20 kg pull cinch a line to 60 kg? A knot isn't a trick - whether it holds is force you can reason about: the right knot for the job, a steady pull versus a gusting one, the geometry of two ropes, and the pulley hidden in a loop of rope. Predict which holds, then load-test the knots yourself. Tiny, deterministic force science - no internet. Ages 9-14.

Distributed-narrative cast

Meet the cast

HitchForge's crew ARE a knot for every job - the cast IS the curriculum: each character IS one knot whose behaviour teaches a force. Bowline makes a fixed loop that never chokes down, the rescue loop that stays the size you tied it no matter how hard you pull. Clove grips a post in a heartbeat but rolls loose if the load keeps gusting - quick, not forever, and the lesson that a steady pull is a different test from a jerking one. Reef binds two equal ropes and spills open easily - great for a parcel, but it capsizes the moment the two ropes are unequal, because the geometry decides it. Sheet (the sheet bend) is Reef's answer to unequal ropes: it wraps the thin rope around a bight of the thick one so the thin one grips instead of sliding off. Trucker, the mentor, threads the rope back through itself for a 3-to-1 pull - a pulley made of rope - and reminds the crew to name the JOB before they pick the knot. Painted portraits + storybooks are a tracked follow-on (R-WEB-CLONE-SPAWN-TRACKED); a text-only crew + flat, deterministic on-device force reasoning ship now - nothing leaves the device. Learn real knots with a real grown-up and real rope.

B

Bowline

The fixed-loop knot that never chokes down - a loop that stays the size you tied it, the right knot when you need a loop that won't tighten under load

C

Clove

The quick hitch to a post that holds a steady pull but rolls loose under a gusting, jerking load - the lesson that holding a moment ago is not the same as safe

R

Reef

The knot that binds two EQUAL ropes and capsizes on unequal ones - the geometry of the two ropes, not effort, decides whether a join holds

S

Sheet

The sheet bend - Reef's fix for unequal ropes, wrapping the thin rope around a bight of the thick one so it grips instead of sliding off

T

Trucker

(Mentor) The trucker's hitch, a pulley made of rope: a 3-to-1 purchase turns a 20 kg haul into a 60 kg line, and reminds the crew to name the job before the knot
