A knot isn’t a trick. Whether it holds is force — the right knot for the job, the kind of load, and the shapes of the ropes.

- 🎯 The right knot for the job. A fixed loop, a hitch to a post, a join between two ropes, or a line pulled tight — each is a different knot. Wrong job, loose knot.
- 💨 Steady vs jerking load. Some knots hold a constant pull but work loose when the load gusts on and off. Holding a moment ago isn’t the same as safe.
- 🪢 Unequal ropes. A reef knot capsizes joining a thin rope to a thick one — the geometry decides it. That’s the job for a sheet bend.
- ⚙️ Mechanical advantage. A trucker’s hitch loops back like a 3-to-1 pulley: haul with 20 kg and the line pulls to 60. Force in × the purchase = force out.
Meet the crew — a knot for every job
- Bowline makes a fixed loop that never chokes down — the rescue loop that stays the size you tied it.
- Clove grips a post in a heartbeat, but rolls loose if the load keeps gusting — quick, not forever.
- Reef binds two equal ropes together and spills open easily — great for a parcel, wrong for unequal ropes.
- Sheet (the sheet bend) is Reef’s answer to unequal ropes: it wraps the thin one around the thick one so it grips.
- Trucker (mentor) is the old hauler who threads the rope back through itself for a 3-to-1 pull, and reminds the crew to name the JOB before they pick the knot.
