Tierce Sings the Sweet Third

Tierce, a small golden songbird, sang the harmony — a line just a “third” above the melody, so close and so sweet that when Tierce and Thrush sang together it sounded like a single glowing sound. This is the coziest harmony there is: two voices, a small step apart, blending warm.

A “third” is a friendly little distance between two notes — close enough to blend, far enough to be its own line. When Thrush sang the tune, Tierce sang the same shape just a third higher: up when the melody went up, down when it went down, always keeping that sweet gap. That parallel motion is why it sounds so smooth and warm — like two friends walking in step.

The trick to a harmony line is to follow the shape of the melody without singing the exact same notes. That’s harder than it sounds — your ear keeps wanting to slide back onto the tune everyone else is singing. Tierce learned to hold that sweet third steady, listening to Thrush but staying a little above, trusting the gap.

When they nailed it, two voices became one shimmering, honey-warm sound that neither could make alone. Harmony in thirds is the sweet blend just above the tune. Follow the melody’s shape, hold your gentle gap, and two voices glow as one. That’s Tierce — close, sweet, and never alone.
