Every morning, before the island wakes, Idris the tortoise walks the shore of Gullwick with his measuring string and his rolled map, and he reads. Not the pretty view — the useful one. Because Idris knows the thing that every young islander has to learn the hard way: a first cottage in a strong spot builds all season, and a first cottage in a weak spot waits all season. And you can't tell the strong from the weak by looking once.

"There isn't one thing to check," he tells the islanders who come to him. "There are five, and the best corner is the one that scores well across all of them. Rush, and you'll grab a spot for a single reason and regret it. Slow down, and read all five." He counts them off on his slow claws.

"Pips. How often will this spot catch a good roll? A lovely corner the dice never favour will keep you waiting. Count the dots on the fields it touches first.

"Mix. Does it touch different goods, or the same one over and over? A corner that reaches stone and timber and grain lets you build almost anything. Three of the same good is far weaker than three different ones.

"The scarce good. Is there a resource that's hard to get anywhere else on the island, and does this spot touch it? Own the rare thing, and every islander will come to you to trade.

"Reach. Can you get to a cove or a port from here, where you can turn spare goods into the ones you're missing? A spot near a good trade is worth a great deal.

"Room to grow. Will you be able to spread out from here later, or will you be boxed in on your very next turn?"

Young Pemba, who wanted only to count pips, once asked him, "Isn't the spot with the most pips just... best?"

"Sometimes," Idris allowed, unhurried. "But not always. A high-pip corner that touches only one good, sits far from any port, and boxes you in — that's a trap dressed as a prize. And a middling-pip corner with a fine mix, the scarce good, a nearby port, and room to grow? That one quietly wins you the season." He rolled his map. "That's why you weigh all five. No single number tells you enough."

Idris beat 5 of 5

And that is the whole of Idris's patient craft — the deep, settled gladness of a shore read right. He doesn't grab. He doesn't guess. He reads every legal corner five ways, ranks them honestly, and plants his stake in the one that scores best across the board. The islanders who learn to do the same are building three cottages while the single-reason folk are still waiting on a roll that rarely comes.

So when you face a choice with more than one thing to weigh — do what Idris does. Don't judge it one way. Read it every way that matters, honestly, and pick the one that holds up best across them all.

Read every corner five ways — pips, mix, the scarce good, reach, and room to grow — then pick the one that scores best on all five. That's Idris.
