Senna has a good eye for what's scarce. While others count how much of everything a corner touches, Senna asks a sharper question: what's the one good this whole island barely has — and does this spot reach it?

She learned to ask it by watching the trades. "Grain's everywhere on Gullwick," she told Pemba, sweeping a paw across the meadows. "Stone too, mostly. But clay? There's one clay-bank on the whole island. One. And everybody needs a little clay eventually — for the kiln, for the good mortar, for the fine work. So the trader who settles beside that clay-bank doesn't have to chase deals. The deals come to them."

Pemba frowned. "But a clay corner might not have great pips."

"It might not," Senna agreed. "So you weigh that too — Idris is right, you always weigh all five. But don't undersell the scarce good. A field of the rarest resource on the island is worth far more than a field of the most common one, because everyone will come to you for it, and you can trade it for whatever you're missing. Owning the thing others can't easily get is a kind of quiet power. You're never short of trading partners."

She'd seen it play out season after season. The islanders who settled on the common goods had to hustle for every trade, because who wants to swap for grain when grain grows everywhere? But the one who'd claimed the clay-bank, or the lone timber stand, or the single spring of good water — they were the ones everyone sought out. Their spare of the rare thing bought them anything they liked.

"It's not greed," Senna said, catching Pemba's look. "The clay was always going to be somewhere. I just noticed it was scarce, and settled where I could share it around by trade. Now the kiln-builders can build, and I get the goods I need in return. The rare thing does the most good when it's held by someone who trades it out — not left sitting unclaimed." Her eyes gleamed. "But held it must be. The scarce good is the one worth reaching for."

That is what Senna reads into a shore that others miss: not just how much, but how rare. The commonest field is pleasant. The rarest field is powerful. And the islander who owns what everyone else is short of never has to go looking for a trade again.

So when you're choosing what to claim or hold, look for what's scarce, not just what's plentiful. Own the thing others can't easily get, and share it out — and watch how everyone comes to you.

Find the island's rarest good and settle beside it — when you own what everyone else is short of, they all come to trade with you. That's Senna.
