Rafi the kingfisher has flown every stretch of the Gullwick shore, and of all the things he reads into a corner, the one he prizes most is reach — how easily a spot can get to a cove-port, where trading happens at a good rate.

"A port's a wonderful thing," he told Anja, hopping along the edge of a little harbour cove. "See here? At this cove you can swap two of any spare good for one of what you need. Two grain for one stone. Two stone for one timber. There's even a special port up the shore where it's three of the same spare for one good — brilliant if you're drowning in one thing." He spread a wing toward the water. "Now — imagine you settle within reach of it. You're never stuck. Whatever you've got too much of, you carry it to the cove and turn it into what you're short of. The port's always open."

Anja considered it. "So a spot near a port is worth more than it looks."

"Far more," said Rafi, his whole small body lighting up the way it did whenever two useful things connected. "A corner with only middling goods but a port right there can beat a rich corner stuck out in the middle of nowhere — because the middling corner can trade its way to anything, and the rich-but-stranded one can only sit on its pile. Reach is what keeps you flexible. It's the difference between 'I have what I have' and 'I can get what I need.'"

He'd watched it decide seasons. Islanders who settled far from any cove hoarded their spares, unable to convert them, growing lopsided — all grain and no stone, or all stone and no grain. But the ones within reach of a port stayed nimble: too much of one thing was never a problem, because the cove would turn it into the thing they lacked. Two-for-one, three-for-one, again and again, whatever the season threw at them.

"That's why I always check the reach," Rafi finished, landing beside Anja. "Not just what a corner has, but what it can get to. A cove within reach means the spares in your basket are as good as the goods you're missing — you've just got to carry them over and swap." He grinned. "I do love a thing that stays connected."

So when you choose where to build — or when you weigh any choice — think about reach, not only what you'd own. Being within reach of a good trade means you're never truly stuck: your spares can always become the things you need.

Settle within reach of a cove-port, where a 2-for-1 swap turns the spares you have into the goods you need. That's Rafi.
