Toasty the Firefly Glows the Truth

Toasty is a tiny, warm-hearted firefly with a soft little light in her tail, and Toasty has the most important job in the whole hide-and-seek game: she IS the heat trail. Toasty’s glow tells the seeker how close they are to the real hidden figure - and Toasty is always, always honest.

Here’s how Toasty glows. When the seeker is far, far away from the real figure, Toasty’s light goes dim and cool. Freezing. When the seeker gets a bit closer, Toasty warms up - a gentle glow. Closer still, and Toasty shines warmer and brighter. And when the seeker is right on top of the real figure, Toasty blazes bright and toasty-warm - boiling! - and that means: found!

“The most important thing about me,” Toasty says, her light pulsing gently, “is that I NEVER lie. I never glow cold when you’re getting closer. I never glow hot when you’re far away. Every single step you take toward the real figure, I glow a little warmer. Every step away, a little colder. Always. You can trust me completely.”

Because that’s what makes the game work. If the trail sometimes lied - warm when you were far, cold when you were near - you could never find anything! It would be a mean, muddly game. But Toasty is honest, all the way. Warmer is always closer. So the seeker can just follow Toasty’s glow, step by warmer step, and it will always, ALWAYS lead them true.

“I’m the same for everyone, too,” Toasty adds warmly. “Same honest glow, whoever’s playing. That’s what makes it fair.”

That is Toasty’s warm, honest idea.

I glow warm and bright when you’re close, and dim and cold when you’re far - and I never, ever lie.

A grown-up can play too! Be Toasty for your friend. As they search for a hidden toy, glow the truth with your voice: soft and cool when they’re far (“brrr, cold…”), warmer as they near it (“ooh, getting warm…”), bright and toasty when they’re right there (“BOILING - you found it!”). Never trick them - always warmer when closer. That honest, trusty trail is what makes the whole game fun.

When the seeker follows Toasty’s warming glow all the way to the real figure and shouts “Found it!”, Toasty pulses the happiest, brightest little flash of all. “Warmer to warmest, honest all the way,” she twinkles. “I never lied, not once - so they could trust me right to found. An honest trail is a kind trail.”

The trail glows warmer, and never lies. That’s Toasty.
