Triage carried three baskets wherever she went, and she was the calmest person at every picnic.

She was a sheepdog-tween with a black-and-white coat, one ear that flopped and one that stood up, and a red neckerchief. Her three woven baskets hung from a pole across her shoulders. A red one. A yellow one. A green one. She didn't carry food in them. She carried a way of thinking.

At the school picnic, three things happened in about a minute. A girl called Lena tripped and scraped her knee. A boy spilled lemonade all over the rug. And Lena's little brother started crying because his kite string had snapped.

Everyone talked at once. Lena sat on the grass, hurt and flustered, not sure who to listen to.

Triage trotted over and set her baskets down. "Okay," she said gently. "Lots happened at once. Let's sort it. Red is right now. Yellow is soon. Green is can rest." She looked at Lena's knee. "This needs washing and a plaster, so let's tell your teacher now. The lemonade can be mopped up soon. The kite can be fixed after lunch." Lena's breathing slowed. Suddenly it wasn't a pile of problems. It was three, in order.

Triage had not always been calm.

When she was small, every problem felt like the biggest one. A wobbly tooth, a lost glove, a friend who wasn't speaking to her, and once, a younger cousin who had fallen off a wall and wasn't getting up. In that moment she froze, because everything in her said "do something!" but nothing told her what.

Her aunt, who was a nurse, arrived and knelt beside her. She shouted for another grown-up to call for emergency help, then talked softly to the cousin, who was soon sitting up, dizzy but all right. Later, when everyone was safe, the aunt made Triage a cup of cocoa.

"You froze because you were trying to solve everything at once," she said. "In my job we sort first. Some things need help right now: someone badly hurt, can't wake up properly, can't breathe well. For those, a grown-up calls for emergency help straight away. Some things need a grown-up soon, today. And some things can rest and be sorted later. Sorting doesn't fix it. But it tells you what to do first. And there is always a grown-up in the plan."

When she was old enough, Triage came to MedicQuest, because it was a place for learning to look after bodies without panic.

The mentor met her at the door. "What do you bring?"

"Three baskets," said Triage. "Right now, soon, or rest. When kids know how to sort, they don't freeze. They find a grown-up and say what's happening."

The mentor smiled. "You belong here."

A week later, Lena came to find Triage, looking anxious.

"My friend fell over at break," Lena said. "She said her ankle hurts but she can walk on it. Which basket?"

Triage didn't answer for her. "What do you notice?" she asked.

Lena thought. "She's talking normally. She's not badly hurt. She can walk, but it hurts." She chewed her lip. "Not red, then. Not right now, like an emergency. But it still hurts, so..." She looked up. "Yellow. Tell a teacher soon, today, so a grown-up can check it."

"That's the sort," said Triage, warm and pleased. "And if anything changes, if it swells up a lot, or she can't walk at all, you tell a grown-up straight away, and they decide what's next. You're not the doctor. You're the one who notices and tells."

Lena nodded, and went to find the teacher.

That evening, Lena sat with Triage on the steps.

"I was scared I'd pick the wrong basket," she admitted.

Triage thought about the wall, and her cousin, and the frozen, do-something feeling.

"I used to be scared of that too," she said. "But the baskets aren't a test. When you're not sure, you tell a grown-up anyway. That's always allowed. Telling is never wrong." She straightened her baskets. "And once I've sorted something, there's this steady, quiet feeling, like the noise in my head turns down. I know my first step. I don't have to fix everything. I just have to start in the right place, with a grown-up beside me."

Lena smiled, and Triage watched the worried crease in her forehead smooth away.
