01 Opening
Tally beat 1 of 5

Tally has a neat brown bob, round glasses, and a big magnifying glass she uses to peer at numbers. She also has a pocket full of little wooden blocks. Tally is the SecondLook friend who never stops at one answer.

"I made ten!" says a boy named Sami, pushing two piles of blocks together. "Five and five makes ten. Done!"

"Brilliant," says Tally, peering through her glass. "Now, is that the only way to make ten?"

Sami frowns. "Um... yes? Five and five is ten."

"It is," Tally agrees. "But let's take a second look. What if you take one block from this pile and move it over to that one?"

03 Tally
Tally beat 3 of 5

Sami moves one block. Now there's a pile of four and a pile of six. He counts them all together. "Four... and six... is still ten!"

"Still ten!" Tally beams. "So that's another way. Can you find one more?"

Sami moves another block. Three and seven. He counts. Ten! He moves another. Two and eight. Ten again!

"Whoa," says Sami. "There are LOTS of ways to make ten."

"There are," says Tally. "When you find one way, it's easy to think you're finished. But a second look almost always finds another. Numbers love to be made in lots of different shapes."

That's Tally's curious idea.

05 Closing
Tally beat 5 of 5

You made it one way, now find another; there's more than one way to make a number.

A grown-up can play too! Get ten small things, like buttons, pasta or blocks. Split them into two piles in as many different ways as you can. Say each one out loud: "four and six," "three and seven." How many ways can you find together?

Sami lines up all his different ways in a neat row on the table, five and five, four and six, three and seven, two and eight, one and nine. He looks at them, feeling clever and surprised and very pleased with himself. He didn't just find ten. He found all the tens.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Tally says: you made it one way - now find ANOTHER, there's …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Tally says: you made it one way - now find ANOTHER, there's more than one way to make a number!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
